2016: The Year Virtual Reality Porn Takes Off?

The porn industry’s been murmuring for awhile now about the possibilities of virtual reality porn. If you believe tech industry experts, 2016 will be a banner year for VR, and leading porn producer Naughty America has an early jump on the game.

Until a few years ago, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas — the biggest trade show of the year, happening each January in Las Vegas with over 170,000 attendees from over 150 countries —  coincided with AVN’s Adult Entertainment Expo, the porn industry trade show.

Companies at both used to stay separate, but nowadays porn companies like Naughty America just show at CES and there’s no pretense that the tech world is somehow above pornography. Truth is, porn has always been a leading motivator of the tech industry — image thumbnails, video compression, streaming webcam — all these innovations have been driven by the porn market. Really!

And the porn-tech drive has been that way for decades now, even before the internet: from VCRs in the 80s to porn in the 90s, streaming content and video-on-demand services over the last decade, and now, it seems, virtual reality that puts you right in the center of the action.

Naughty America let a number of tech writers try out previews, and the geek boys got super excited. “It’s going all over her face, oh god,” cried Mashable’s Raymond Wong, in between fits of giggles, while someone filmed him watching a demonstration. “It’s so incredibly realistic that I had to pause halfway through the demo to wipe steam off the Gear VR’s lenses,” said Brad Chacos from PC World.

The company currently has 27 scenes listed on their website, and they’re releasing one or two new ones each week. The newest, “The Dirty Dean,” features a busty teacher who’s taken two misbehaving, barely-legal students into the dean’s office for some punishment. Guess who plays the Dean… you!

Wong also tried out a video where he inhabited a female body. “I swear I smelled his armpits,” he said of the male porn star in the scene.

Currently, the films show 180 degrees of action, which is to say that you can look in any direction except behind you. The film’s aren’t yet interactive, because the company wants the scenes to play on a maximum range of devices, including the Samsung Gear ($150 to $250) and, more affordably, Google Cardboard ($2 to $25).

Give it a year, though: the porn-world will likely come up with some new tech-innovation that’ll allow for a full 360 degrees and, eventually, a fully immersive visual experience blurring the line between virtual and actual.
