We’ve been scouring the web and social media for developments about the Orlando shooting. Here’s a collection of links that mention items worth knowing about.
1) The names of victims have started being released.
2) Two haunting reports of the attacks have emerged
First, witness testimony reports that when the gunfire started, the shots followed the thumping beat of the music, so it took a little while before people understood what was happening. Second, rescue workers reported hearing the phones of the shooting victims ringing in their pockets as their friends and family tried desperately to contact them.
3) There’s some heartwarming tales of courage too though
There’s an excellent feature on James McGill, a survivor who helped a wounded man escape and Buzzfeed reporter Dominic Holden has written an excellent piece on the Orlando community’s response which gives hope to a stronger community rising from this weekend’s carnage. There’s also a tear-jerking piece about the families of an engaged male couple who will have a joint funeral since the two can no longer marry.
4) A crowdfunding campaign has raised over $2.2 million dollars for victims
The GoFundMe page is being managed by Equality Florida, the state’s LGBT civil rights organization, and payments will be distributed by the National Center for Victims of Crime, a group which also distributed funds collected after the Chattanooga and Aurora shootings.
5) Tributes around the world (and online) are defiantly mourning for Orlando
You can check out excellent photographs of world monuments lighting up in rainbow colors all over the world here. One of our favorite responses has happened online though. The shooter’s father reported that the shooter was once enraged at the sight of two men kissing. In response, people on Twitter and Instagram have begun hashtagging pictures of #TwoMenKissing to defiantly show their love in the face of fear-inspiring hatred.
