Ryan Murphy Just Revealed the Next ‘American Horror Story’ Theme, and It’s Good
Ryan Murphy just revealed what the American Horror Story season 8 theme will be, and it’s amazing. He tweeted, “The Coven/Murder House AHS crossover season won’t be happening next year…because it’s happening THIS YEAR. AHS #8 WITCHES RULE THIS SEPTEMBER.” The first season, Murder House, saw a family move into a haunted mansion in Los Angeles, while the third season, Coven, followed a girl who is sent to a special academy in New Orleans after discovering she is a witch.
Deadline reports that Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, and Kathy Bates are returning for season 8. We’re not sure what characters they’ll be playing, as Paulson and Peters were in both seasons that will be crossing over.
Paulson played medium Billie Dean Howard in the Murder House season, a part which she reprised in AHS fifth season Hotel. In Coven, Paulson played Miss Robichaux’s Academy headmistress Cordelia Foxx. Peters played murderous teen Tate Langdon in Murder House and frat president Kyle Spencer in Coven.
The news comes after Murphy teased the forthcoming season with Entertainment Weekly for a recent cover story on his latest series, Pose. He said, “You will see so many fan favorites return that you’ll feel like it’s The Love Boat. Its a very high concept.” He added that it’s “unlike anything we’ve done because there’s a big hook to it” and teased “a huge thing that happens” in the fifth episode.
In April, he said that Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Kathy Bates, Billie Lourd, Billy Eichner, Cheyenne Jackson, Adina Porter and Leslie Grossman will return, with Joan Collins joining the cast as Peters’ grandmother. At the time, however, he noted the crossover wasn’t next, so it’s unclear if this cast lineup sticks.
One question that is on our mind is: will Connie Britton or Jessica Lange join as well? Britton hasn’t been involved with the series since the first season of Murder House, while Jessica Lange was instrumental in the success of both seasons crossing over.
