When Andy Cohen—host of Watch What Happens Live on Bravo, as well as the cable network’s many Real Housewives reunion specials—recently sat down with Kelly Ripa as the Nov. 25 guest host on Live with Kelly. To the surprise of Ripa, Cohen started the show with a ‘shout out’ to his good friend, thanking her for pressuring him to get a spot on his lip checked out. That spot, as it turned out, was melanoma.

The small black spot appeared on Cohen’s bottom lip earlier this year, and when she saw it, Ripa says she knew something was up. She pressured him incessantly to get it checked out by a dermatologist, despite Cohen, 49, blowing it off, thinking it was nothing. When he did get it checked out, it turned out it was skin cancer. Cohen has since had the melanoma removed and everything seems to be in good shape.

“I just want to thank you because you were so dogmatic,” Cohen told Ripa on the show. “And it’s all fine.”

Cohen also put himself ‘on blast’ as a self-described “tanorexic.”

“I love the sun, I really do, but just be careful,” Cohen said. “And I, of course, never thought that that kind of thing would happen to me, and it will change my relationship to the sun. But you really helped me out there, and thank you for staying on me.”

“Well, I love you, and you mean a lot to me,” Ripa said.

This short segment should act as an important reminder to all: skin cancer is no joke. If you’re someone who finds yourself in the sun often—or even if you’re not—remember to protect your skin and to visit a dermatologist annually for mole checks.
