The Best Arthouse Films on Netflix: July 2017

Be first to like this.

June is over, which means that we’re about to get a new batch of Netflix adds! In this month’s look at what’s coming to Netflix, we’re paying special attention to the arthouse selections and family films — though, as always, you can find the full list of what’s coming at the bottom of the article.

The Best Arthouse Films on Netflix

One of our favorite films is hitting Netflix this July — Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s debut Delicatessen (July 1). The film is a surrealist, post-apocalyptic cannibalism comedy — made by the director of Amélie. It’s precisely as strange and wonderful as you’re imagining.

You might also be interested in Munroe Island (July 25), an Indian thriller that looks like it’ll be a coming-of-age film… until it’s not. If you’re an Adam Sandler fan who prefers more highbrow pursuits, there’s P.T. Anderson’s Punch Drunk Love (July 1). Finally, there’s The Incredible Jessica James (July 28), an indie comedy starring The Daily Show‘s Jessica Williams.

The Best Family Films on Netflix

Whether you want to watch movies with your family or wallow alone in nostalgia, Netflix has you covered. The biggest is E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (July 1) — though no word yet whether or not the government agents will have guns or walkie-talkies. Also on July 1, Netflix gets the first three Land Before Time movies, Free Willy and The Mighty Ducks.

Other Netflix Highlights in July

We probably should have put it up in the arthouse section, but a little movie you probably haven’t heard of is coming to Netflix — something called Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (July 18). No idea what it’s about, but it might be good. Other films you might want to check out include Christopher Guest’s Best in ShowTitanic, and the surprisingly GLAAD-approved Boat Trip (all July 1).

Watch These Before They’re Gone

Be sure to watch Mel Brooks’ anti-racism classic Blazing Saddles before it leaves July 1. Also on the first of July, we’re losing Matt Groening’s sci-fi satire Futurama, love letter to film Hugo, and Tim Burton’s Batman. July 1 also sees the end of Blondie’s New York, the film about the making of Parallel LinesWe’re less concerned about losing three of the American Pie Presents cash-in sequels.
