The Best Stand-Up Specials on Netflix: May 2017

Be first to like this.

It’s almost the end of the month, and you know what that means: New Netflix! In this month’s look at the new Netflix additions, we take a special look at stand-up — along with a few other recommendations. And, as always, you can find the full list of new arrivals at the bottom of this article.

The Best Stand-Up Specials on Netflix

May is a great month for stand up comedy. Popular gay Mexican comedian Manu NNa has his newest special, Simplementa Manu NNa (May 5). Maria Bamford: Old Baby (May 2), featuring the Lady Dynamite star should be outstanding as usual. Cult star and Saturday Night Live Weekend Update favorite Norm MacDonald has his first special since 2011, Hitler’s Dog, Gossip and Trickery (May 9). Daily Show correspondent Hasan Minhaj’s debut special Homecoming King (May 23) promises to have the same biting wit he brings to that show. A few other specials to keep an eye out for include Sarah Silverman: A Speck of Dust (May 30) and Tracy Morgan: Staying Alive (May 16) and. Finally, if you just want to watch something about stand up, there’s Richard Pryor: Icon (May 1).

The Best Returning Series on Netflix

May also brings with it a number of returning Netflix originals. We’re excited for the Wachowskis’ Sense8 (May 5), especially after this year’s Christmas special. We’ve also been anxiously awaiting season 3 of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (May 19). Speaking of highly-anticipated returns, season 2 of Aziz Ansari’s brilliant Master of None (May 12) is finally coming back. Other returning series include House of Cards (May 30) and Bill Burr’s F is for Family (May 30).

Other Netflix Highlights in May

There’s a few widely-beloved films coming to the service this May. For example, the Johnny Depp-starring Chocolat and George “Mad Max” Miller’s Happy Feet (both May 1). Twilight fans will be excited for The Host (May 7), not to be confused with the outstanding Korean horror film of the same name. The Netflix original documentary Get Me Roger Stone (May 12) about a “malevolent Forrest Gump” should be interesting — and if you want, you can watch the original Forrest Gump (May 1), too.

However, if you’re excited for Two Lovers and a Bear (May 2), before you check it out — just know they mean a literal bear.

Watch These Before They’re Gone

This month our reaction to most of the stuff leaving Netflix is “Good Riddance.” However, there are a few to check out before they slip out the door. Jurassic Park I-III (May 1) all leave the service. So does Oliver Stone’s The Doors (May 1), and the comedy classics Grosse Pointe Blank and What About Bob? (both May 5). A number of TV shows are going away too, including Scrubs (May 2), American Dad (May 17), Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown (May 15) and Graceland (May 26).
