Blue Ribbon Boys: YouTube Star Tres Pacos Wants to Break the Chain of HIV Disinformation
This post is also available in: Español
A Mexican YouTuber with more than 25,000 subscribers, Tres Pacos has a very fresh and friendly attitude, and he’s a #BlueRibbonBoy! Go check out his YouTube channel, and find him as “trespacos” (Three Pacos) on Twitter, Insta and Snapchat.
Tell me a little about yourself.
I’m a very complex guy, I have three personalities! (Just kidding.) I worry too much. I’m usually in my head too much, and that distracts me from time to time. But it also makes me a good friend, loyal and a great listener. I’m Paco, a graphic designer by profession and a YouTuber at heart. I want my videos to make people aware of LGBTQ-related issues. YouTube gave me a way to share my story — to create a healthy community by telling people in the closet they’re not alone, and to stand up to homophobes.
What led you to become the person you are now?
Two things: One was my own need to express myself as a young gay man. I live in a small town, and sometimes Mexican family traditions can be a struggle. The other was seeing so many YouTubers sharing who they are; their example motivated me to be part of this digital change.
Why is it important for you to be part of #BlueRibbonBoys?
I think campaigns like this are necessary to build a better informed community about HIV. Even though we’re in the digital age and have so much information so easily available, there’s still fear about this issue — people don’t always know the facts, so we have to break this chain of disinformation. I’ve achieved some visibility within the community thanks to my YouTube channel, so it’s important to me to do everything I can to fight the HIV stigma.
What do you do to stay up-to-date on HIV?
I read the latest news about new discoveries from trusted sources, and I start the conversation with friends and family in an open way with an eye to tearing down myths and misinformation.
What kind of actions do you take to promote and inform your followers?
I’m not just a Blue Ribbon Boy. I also participate in government campaigns and make videos where I talk about HIV — prevention, treatment, the importance of knowing your status and more.
Will you be doing something special for this year’s World HIV Day?
Of course! I’m planning to make a video about myths and misconceptions of HIV.
