Brandon Flynn, the 23-year-old American actor who played Justin Foley in the Netflix teen suicide drama series 13 Reasons Why, recently came out in an Instagram post about Australia’s same-sex marriage vote.

While he didn’t specify his exact sexual orientation, he repeatedly referred to the LGBTQ community as “Us”, writing: “We’ve been scared shitless our whole lives thanks to all the stigmas that surround Us.”

Brandon Flynn was inspired by the Australian same-sex marriage vote

Right now, Australia is in the middle of a non-binding but still important nationwide vote on whether to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. The result could determine whether the government takes up legislation to do so. The voting lasts from September 12 to Nov. 7, 2017.

In response to the vote, a plane rented from the company Skywriting Australia wrote “Vote No” four times over the capitol city of Sydney on Sunday morning. It occurred “a day after the Coalition for Marriage launched its campaign against same-sex marriage,” according to news.com.au.

In response, Flynn posted an image of a rainbow-colored banner with the word “equality” on it and he typed the following message:

Just saw the “vote no” message in the sky, looming over Sydney. Thank you for raising money and hiring on a plane to write your lack of support amongst the clouds. I hope your hate and lack of understanding fades, just like those words will.

Too many of my friends have been kicked out of their homes, kept in the closet, beat up, killed, ridiculed by church and state, institutionalized… and you are scared that if we vote YES, you won’t be able to show your hate for Us. Fuck that.

We’ve been scared shitless our whole lives thanks to all the stigmas that surround Us, stigmas that were set in place by the same kind of people who flew that plane over Sydney.

We’ve fought, we’ve come out bravely even in our fear, and you wrote a message in the sky because you’re scared. Equality takes courage, it worries me that too many people in this world lack the balls to stand up for what is right. #fuckhate

Brandon Flynn’s Instagram hints at his sexuality

Although Flynn’s character on 13 Reasons Why is ostensibly straight, his Instagram account has several pictures expressing his love of RuPaul’s Drag Race, pictures of him hugging other men, a shot of him wearing a leopard print dress and an image of him at San Francisco’s Pride parade.

Tellingly, the first piece of art hung in his new apartment was a picture of Jake the dog and Finn the human from Cartoon Network’s animated series Adventure Time; the painting had a rainbow background.

Perhaps the biggest clue of all is the fact that Flynn starred in an independent short film about being gay in which he kissed his 13 Reasons co-star Miles Heizer. The actors’ representatives said that the two were not romantically involved.

None of these items necessarily signify that Flynn is gay or bi — lots of straight people like drag, rainbows and identify with the LGBTQ community. He could also ostensibly be asexual or some other variation of “queer.” But they suggest that he has a longer history of identifying with aspects of LGBTQ culture.
