Breaking: The Stage and Dance Floor of a Canary Islands Gay Bar Has Collapsed, Injuring Several

Early in the morning on Sunday, Nov. 26, the stage and dance floor of the Butterfly Disco Club, a Canary Islands gay bar in Tenerife, collapsed at least two stories. Several are reportedly injured.

The Canary Islands are Spanish islands off the coast of West Africa. Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, best known for its annual Carnaval de Santa Cruz festival and its many gorgeous beaches.

Our sources tell us that at least tens of clubgoers — and the drag queen who was performing at the time of the Canary Islands gay bar collapse — are injured, while many others managed to escape to safety. We are currently unsure whether any deaths have been reported.

Presently we aren’t sure whether the incident was a terrorist attack or due to structural issues with the bar. Our sources say “There was a sound, but I think it was more structural [sounding].”

One bar patron tells us it was a “terrifying” incident, and he claims many people “stampeded out” following the collapse. They took no photos of the aftermath and opted instead to get as far away from the bar as possible. He and his friends are still quite shaken by the incident.

“We are still in shock,” he says. “We didn’t stick around long enough to see what happened really.”

The Canary Islands gay bar in question, Butterfly Disco Club, is a popular spot among gay locals and tourists that refers to itself as “La disco gay de todos y para todos” (A gay disco for everyone.) It regularly offers up dancing, go-go boys, late-night drag performances and a backroom. Tonight at the bar was being billed as a “stripper night,” featuring music by DJ Israel Cartaya Sonny and a drag show starting at 2 a.m.

We will continue to update the story as more information becomes available.
