5 Things You Should Know About ‘Bodak Yellow’ Singer Cardi B

You’ve probably been hearing the name Cardi B a lot these past few days. The rapper made history when her hit song “Bodak Yellow” snatched the number one spot on the Billboard 100.

She’s only the second solo female rapper (without a fellow featured artist) to do that in the chart’s 59-year history since Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” in 1998.

Here are 5 things you should know about Cardi B:

1. Cardi B’s queer sister inspired her name.

Longtime fans of Cardi know the rapper has an adorable relationship with her younger sister Hennessy Carolina. Hennessy is into women, and she’s had a girlfriend for more than a year.

Cardi B. is short for Bacardi, a nickname people used because her sister’s name is Hennessey.

“Her name is Hennessy, so everybody used to be like ‘Bacardi’ to me,” she said during an appearance on The Wendy Williams Show. “Then I shortened it to Cardi B.”

The “B” sometimes stands for “beautiful” and other times it’s “bully, depending on the day,” she says.

2. You may recognize Cardi B from television.

In 2015, Cardi became a regular on VH1’s Love and Hip Hop: New York. She left after two seasons to further pursue her career in music.

Over the course of her time on the series, she earned a reputation as a quick-tempered, no-filter firecracker — as evidenced by the time she threw her ultra chunky Gucci heels at an enemy during a reunion special.

3. Cardi B used to be a stripper.

Cardi B. began stripping at the age of 19 in an effort to earn money to escape an abusive relationship with her boyfriend.

“I was poor as hell. I was living with my ex-boyfriend that was beating my ass. I had to drop out of school. I was living with his mama and two pitbulls in a bedroom. It was crazy,” she told VladTV. “A lot of people make [stripping] so negative, but it really saved me from a lot of things. I went back to school.”

4. Cardi B is a big fan of Lady Gaga.

Cardi paid tribute to the pop star in high school with her own rendition of “Bad Romance.” She also credits Lady Gaga as one of her fashion icons.

5. Cardi B perfectly responded to Azealia Banks’ shit-talking on Twitter.

Azealia Banks went on Twitter to talk about why she wasn’t happy Cardi B’s track made it to the top of the charts. Banks tweeted, “Most visibility needs to be a bit more refined. The female rap representative needs to be intelligent. Female rap, rather than a woman with actual brains and intellect. There are ALOT of very smart, well-read, intelligent female rappers.”

Cardi B didn’t pay Banks too much mind. She decided to sit in the shade instead of throw it, by posting this video of Banks singing along to “Bodak Yellow” in the club.
