“WARNING: Your children and grandchildren are being re-educated in public schools to accept the gay lifestyle as normal. WARNING: They are being taught that it is normal to have two daddies or two mommies.” Uhhh…it is normal. It may not be as common at having both a mother and a […]
“After Smith’s death, Brigham Young led the Mormons to their headquarters of Salt Lake City. Young had many wives, and believed that those with dark skin are accursed.” “Sure their theology is a little bit weird, but they are super nice and friendly!” Except to the millions of gay and […]
Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon went on a fundraising bender, raising $86,000 for DonorsChoose.org. The caveat? If they succeeded in raising at least $27,000, Colbert had to perform Rebecca Black’s now-iconic “Friday,” live to Fallon’s late-night audience. Thankfully, America wanted to see Colbert’s performance really badly and blew that figure […]
Betty White is getting her own reality show, and we couldn’t be more excited. At first, we thought it would be about the trials and tribulations of life as on octogenarian super star – radical! Then we actually read the news, and it’s going to be an old people’s version of Punk’d, with a […]
OMGlee, y’all. This woman is off her meds. Victoria Jackson, of 80’s SNL and squeaky-voiced fame, made quite a splash last week when she blogged about the “Disgusting” gay kiss on Glee. (We thought it was sweet, FYI.) CNN invited her onto Showbiz tonight to embarrass the shit out of […]
In Vanity Fair’s Gay Guide to Glee: Season 2, Episode 15, “Sexy”, writer Brett Berk refers to gay characters Blaine and Kurt as “foam party fags.” Seriously, Vanity Fair?! • “Animal” (Neon Trees) *** Nice singing. But how can having girls in the audience make these cartwheeling, foam-party fags straight-sexy? […]
Admittedly, much of this is hearsay, but when the New York Times is quoting anonymous Fox News executives about getting Glenn Beck off the airways, we think it’s safe for us to chime in on the topic. Glenn Beck’s contract at Fox News reportedly expires in December of this year, […]
Monday night means only one thing for many gays right now: RuPaul’s Drag Race! In my capacity as the GayTravel.com Gay Travel Guru, I had the chance to sit down with the winner of Season Two, Tyra Sanchez, in Vancouver!
Why does this obviously gay man who is discussing the fact that he cannot for a moment allow himself to be attracted to men in movies and online insist that it is possible to pray away the gay, even as he admits that he has not actually achieved this impossible […]
Shady, shady, ABC! You would have never guessed it while watching at home, but when Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem took to the stage to present the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay on Sunday night in their matching white tuxedos, the two did an impromptu slow dance before locking lips. […]
The inspiring, charismatic, gorgeous Zach Wahls was welcomed onto Ellen’s show to discuss his viral testimony before an Iowa court that sought to strip the state’s gay and lesbian couples of their marriage equality. While the Iowa House still voted to write discrimination into the constitution, Zach’s video has gone […]
In what is perhaps the world’s most unfair matchup, Jeopardy is pitting Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, the Jeopardy All-Stars, against Watson, an IBM Supercomputer. Watson is represented by an overblown iPod of an avatar, with a strange whirling earth for a head. Watson is also not really just a […]
Binging is the new smoking, a nasty habit that is all too addicting. The gay TV landscape has drastically changed in recent years. With streaming services like Hulu and Netflix broadly expanding our access to new and surprising TV shows and characters. In years passed, no one wanted to watch infomercials and black-and-white reruns at 2 A.M.. Now we can lie back and watch whatever we want regardless of what’s playing on our local stations.
All of this disruption in the television industry is producing some wildly inventive results. With new revenue systems, networks and streaming companies are taking greater risks with the kinds of shows that they produce. Long gone are the days where every show has to be about white heterosexual twenty-somethings dating in the big city. Today, we have a smorgasbord of viewing options, including an increasing variety of gay and trans characters.
While some of us grew up on innovative hits like Will & Grace, new shows like Transparent, Difficult People, and Orange Is the New Black are giving audiences a complex, nuanced portrait of what it means to be gay and trans in the modern world.
Sometimes painfully realistic and other times hilarious, gay TV shows are an important step towards equality for all.
With the movie industry getting a D+ in its depiction of the gay community, television is often the only place to turn for sophisticated stories about the LGBTQ community. Whether you like gay dating shows with naked guys, experimental shows about the human condition or trashy soap operas, you can get all of your gay-themed TV news right here. Learn about everything gay that’s coming to a streaming service near you.
