The man behind a crusade to put porn-blocking filters on electronic devices has a history of stalking, harassment and trying to marry a computer.

Porn-Blocking Software

Many states are pushing a bill to force manufacturers to put porn-blocking software on devices that access the internet, like computers, tablets and smartphones.

Last December, for instance, South Carolina Republicans filed a bill called the Human Trafficking Prevention Act. The bill calls for legal punishment for any manufacturer who sells an internet-ready device without installing porn-blocking software on it. Retailers or consumers can deactivate this software by paying a $20 fee.

A similar bill was proposed in Alabama. Randall Marshall, legal director for the ACLU of Alabama, called it “censorship, plain and simple.” And other states are considering similar legislation.

The Strange Man Behind the Legislation

Why are all of these bills popping up all of a sudden? Part of it has to do with a man named Chris Sevier (a.k.a. Mark Sevier, a.k.a. Chris Severe). In recent years, Sevier has launched an all-out war against internet pornography. In 2013, he sued Apple for selling him a device without porn filters, which Sevier claims led to a porn addiction and then the downfall of his marriage. Now he’s fighting for legislation to force all electronics manufacturers to pre-install anti-porn software.

According to a detailed profile in the Daily Beast, Sevier is a disbarred former attorney with a very checkered past. Sevier has a long history of strange, unstable behavior. Here’s a partial list of some of his major misadventures:

This is by no means a complete list of Sevier’s utterly bonkers behavior. There’s more over at the Beast.

One question remains: why on Earth are politicians listening to this man?
