Alan Cumming, NYC’s Newest Bar Owner: ‘It’s Everything I Could’ve Possibly Wanted’

It’s only been open for a week, but Club Cumming — one of the latest watering holes to hit the NYC nightlife scene, located in the East Village — is “a really great new thing in my life,” says queer actor Alan Cumming, who is also one of the bar’s owners. The space, formerly known as Eastern Bloc, opened to the public on Sept. 15 with a week of packed parties.

Cumming is sharing the role of bar proprietor with two other gay NYC tastemakers, Benjamin Maisani and Daniel Nardicio. And among the bar’s slate of planned events are parties as wide-ranging as live jazz nights and disco DJs to book releases and tantric sex workshops.

“It’s a sort of brick-and-mortar version of the parties I’ve been having for a couple years,” Cumming tells us, presumably referring to his now-infamous post-Cabaret dressing room parties, which not only welcomed a veritable who’s-who of NYC nightlife and high society but featured branded party accoutrements, a neon sign, a doorman and even a Campari sponsorship.

“It’s only been open a week, but it’s everything I could’ve possibly wanted so far,” he says. “It’s a really mixed crowd. We have different sorts of nights, live performance usually early in the evening, and then it always becomes a sort of sweaty dance party later on.”

Before the bar’s opening, Cumming was adamant that it would be a home for people of all ages, genders, lifestyles and sexualities.

I just love the message I was trying to put out about ‘all ages, all genders, all sexualities, everyone welcome, no judgments,'” he tells us. “It’s happening, and there’s a really great crowd of people. I think when you very publicly put an ethos out about how you want something to be, people take that on and it manifests itself. So it’s been really exciting for that to happen, and we’ve got lots of fun things planned.”

Perhaps best of all, Club Cumming is proving to be a hit among local NYC tastemakers and artists, some of whom have popped in for impromptu performances. The night before we spoke to Cumming, Dresden Dolls lead singer Amanda Palmer stopped in and sang a song for the crowd. “The cast of Cats came down last night and danced some ‘Cats moves’ to the soundtrack,” Cumming adds. “It was hilarious.”

“I’m very happy to be a bar proprietor,” he says, and the joy that comes through the actor’s voice when he discusses his latest venture is palpable.

As of today, Cumming is also starring in the film Battle of the Sexes alongside Emma Stone and Steve Carrell. In the film, Stone plays famed lesbian tennis champion Billie Jean King, who must go face-to-face against former male tennis star Bobby Riggs, played by Carrell. Cumming portrays Ted Tinling, the Women’s Tennis League’s gay but closeted wardrobe designer.
