A group of trans activists has written an open letter to National Geographic editor-in-chief  Susan Goldberg criticizing the Czech Republic version of the “Gender Revolution issue for its “blatantly transphobic” translated articles.

The group, named Tran*sparent, explains:

The Czech edition of your January issue has some original content which can be, without any exaggeration, characterized as transphobic. We assume you are familiar with the cover that was chosen for this issue in our country, and while we do think the image of bathroom signs oversimplifies the topic and neglects its deeply personal substance, it really is only the beginning.

Here are the two covers published in the U.S. and the one chosen for the Czech Republic:

The group then goes into details and criticizes what the magazine says about gender issues. An opening editorial piece translates gender as “sex identities” and Tomáš Tureček, author of the editorial, adds: “the blurring of the most intimate lines between individuals is happening at a time when the West is dealing with the process of disintegration of traditional family, nation, religion and race.”

Among the translated stories, Trans*parent saw lots of homophobic and transphobic expressions: “In the description which goes with the photo of a diverse group of young people on the previous page, “queer” is explained to mean “faggot”, “non-binary” somehow becomes “pansexual” and “straight female” is translated as “normální žena” (“normal woman”).”

The U.S. and alternate European versions of the “Gender Revolution” issue made headlines recently by featuring trans child Avery Jackson, who has campaigned for equality for years, on their covers. At the beginning of the year, the French version of this National Geographic issue chose not to show the picture of Jackson but one of a Russian church with this title: “Special Russia”, although the main topic inside was about gender revolution!
