Fuck yeah, Facebook! Effective immediately, Facebook has added two new options to your profile’s relationship status. “In a civil union” and “In a domestic partnership” join status stalwarts like Single, Married, In a relationship, Widowed, Separated, Divorced, and everyone’s favorite “It’s complicated.” Hey, we’ve all been there.

The new status options will continue to be rolled out in countries across the globe where those options exist. Countries which provide full marriage equality for LGBT citizens will see no change, as it’s not necessary.

While the company is taking some flak from those who see marriage inequality as the civil rights initiative of our generation, we applaud Facebook for adding the options. And nobody is forcing you and your partner of fifteen years to downgrade from “married” to “in a domestic partnership.” Everyone is free to select the status that resonates most with their relationship.
