Wowzers: In the latest Gallup poll, American adults, on average, estimate that 25% of their fellow Americans are gay! This is just simply too hard to believe, especially given that only a slim majority support gay marriage rights.
If Americans think that there are that many gays, how can they truly be against gay rights? That’s institutionalized discrimination against one in four citizens, which would make the withholding of gay rights the most egregious civil rights abuse in the history of the United States!
But we digress. Onto the numbers:
U.S. adults, on average, estimate that 25% of Americans are gay or lesbian. More specifically, over half of Americans (52%) estimate that at least one in five Americans are gay or lesbian, including 35% who estimate that more than one in four are. Thirty percent put the figure at less than 15%.
Gallup did this poll back in 2002, and the average estimate was that one in five Americans were gay. Interestingly, twice as many people declined to give an estimate in 2002 than in 2011.
Of course, political leanings, age, education and socio-economic class were all indicators of just how high an estimate any particular respondent gave.
