Fourth of July was hotter than ever this year!
Every gay boy seemed to be in Provincetown or Fire Island. We weren’t, but luckily for us we had Instagram to gawk at all the debauchery happening in our absence.
Located at the very tip of Cape Cod in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, Provincetown is a small coastal resort town with a year-round population of just under 3,000. But in the summer, the population shoots up as high as 60,000 and the beaches and boardwalks are full of mostly hot trade.
Often called “P-town,” the oasis is known for its beaches, harbor, artists and its status as a vacation destination for the queer community.
Brian Rafferty produced a Fourth of July rager at the Crown and Anchor with host Boomer Banks. New York drag diva Maddelynn Hatter also hosted her own cabaret that had a sold-out audience.
Not everyone was lucky to make it quite so far north. Instead, others ventured out to Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove for the infamous Drag Invasion.
During the summer of 1976, a restaurant in New York’s Fire Island Pines denied entry to a drag queen. When others in Cherry Grove heard what had happened, they too dressed up in drag, and on July 4 sailed to the Pines by water taxi. The boatload of drag queens that stormed that day was dubbed the first “invasion.”
Now, many years later, the annual Fourth of July Invasion of the Pines attracts hundreds of drag queens and thousands of spectators to what has become an annual Independence Day event.
Alyssa Edwards was on hand to host a pool party where the queens gathered after they got off the boat. She even jumped into the pool in full face.
All in all, our community was out loud and proud this Independence Day, reminding us that we have the power to make America gay again!
