A volunteer of the French LGBTQ youth organization Le Refuge has reported that a 19-year-old boy outed by the French TV show Touche Pas à Mon Poste (Don’t Touch My TV) has been kicked out of his home as a result of the public outing. (The news source is in French.)
The host of the TV show in question created a fake profile on a gay personals site and then called gay and bi men on the phone, pretending to be Jean-José, a “muscled and well-hung” man, while affecting a feminine voice and making degrading comments mocking the men on the air. The show has since had over 20,000 complaints lodged against it and has lost all of its advertisers.
Romain, a 28-year-old volunteer with the Le Refuge hotline, told the French publication L’Express that he received a call from the “crying, upset” 19-year-old at 3 a.m., the morning of Friday, May 19, 2017. “He was clearly feeling cheated, scammed,” Roman said, “having fallen into a trap.”
Romain told the publication:
“[The 19-year-old] received calls and his family members texting having recognized his voice. He even received threats from some of them, angry that he could disclose his sexual orientation on television. I stayed with him, I tried to calm him, to reassure him about the fact that homosexuality is not a choice or a shame. I even suggested to him to complain [to federal authorities about the show].”
Le Refuge reportedly heard from the young man five days later and learned that he had been kicked out of his house, though he is now in a safe place.
Hanouna has issued an apology stating, “I never wanted to be malicious, undermine any human dignity or any privacy whatsoever. On the contrary. I always thought that laugh at everything with everyone was the best way to respect all differences to include, to reconcile, to assemble in short to love.”
His show has been accused of homophobia and sexism in the past.
