You Better Vote: RuPaul Endorses Gavin Newsom for California Governor

RuPaul just starred in his own PSA, suggesting that Californians make it out to the primary on June 5th. Not only did he urge people to vote, he specifically asked that people vote for one candidate in particular who is running for the state’s governorship: current California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom.

“We’re here to make sure you know that California’s primary is on June 5th. It’s absolutely essential you get out and vote,” the pair begin. Next, RuPaul endorses Newsom by saying, “And today, I want to tell the world that I’ll be casting my vote for you, Gavin.”

“Gavin is a person who changed the course of history for LGBT Americans. Back in 2004, he was the first mayor to marry same-sex couples,” Ru explains. “This brave action jump-started the marriage equality movement and he’s been on the front lines of so many important issues fighting for the rights of LGBT youth, standing up to the NRA and legalizing marijuana here in California. That’s right, legal weed, baby.”

Gavin served as the Mayor of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011. He is a national progressive figure and was a prominent early advocate for marriage equality, universal healthcare and an influential voice in favor of the legalization of weed in California.

“Only in California can we lay claim to being able to step up and step in on those debates and again I’m humbled and honored for you having my back and supporting my campaign for governor,” Newsom adds.

The video concludes with RuPaul telling viewers that they lose the right to complain if they don’t vote. Newsom also shows off his Drag Race knowledge, attempting his best Miss Vangie impression that isn’t so bad.

Two polls confirm months-long trends showing Gavin Newsom leading the pack, with Republican businessman John Cox and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in second and third. One of those polls released Wednesday put Newsom at 25%, with Cox at 19% and Villaraigosa at 15% among likely voters.
