One gay Buddhist monk uses an unusual medium to spread his religion’s message of enlightenment: eyeliner.

When Kodo Nishimura of Tokyo isn’t busy meditating, he moonlights as a makeup artist.

He’s particularly fond of helping trans women look fabulous.

Nishimura has even gotten to work on Miss Universe contestants.

Nishimura came out publicly in a photo shoot for Out in Japan. Buzzfeed writes, “As a Buddhist monk, I want everyone to live happily in harmony. I believe makeup is one of the tools to make yourself happy, and if you’re happy, it becomes easier to be kind to others. In that sense, I think it’s a good link,” he said.

It’s a unique method of religious outreach, and we absolutely love it.
