What If Straight Couples Were Treated Like Gay Couples on Vacation?
Virgin Holidays partnered with ATTN: to create a new video that shows what would happen if straight couples were treated like gay couples on vacation.
Virgin Holidays conducted a study to go along with the flip-the-script clip, and surveyed both straight and LGBTQ people in the UK about their comfort levels while on vacation. They found that 84% of the heterosexual respondents felt comfortable showing affection in public, while only 5% of LGBTQ respondents also felt safe.
“At Virgin Holidays, we believe everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, has the right to be whoever they are, wherever they are,” Virgin founder Richard Branson said. “That’s why it is shocking that in today’s society some of us can’t even enjoy a simple holiday without fear of discrimination. It’s fantastic that Virgin Holidays are raising awareness around this important issue.”
The research from the Virgin Holidays study also revealed that 58% of those LGBTQ respondents had been stared at while on holiday, 29% had been verbally abused and 10% were threatened with physical violence.
“Holidays should be relaxing, fun and full of adventure. Unfortunately for LGBT+ people this still isn’t always the case,” Joe Thompson, managing director at Virgin Holidays said. “We want everyone to take on the world and that’s why we’re working with one of the biggest issues driven publishers to continue to raise awareness of the issues faced by LGBT+ travelers on holiday, and to work with our partners abroad, to give customers the best experience possible.”
In 2016, Virgin Holidays revealed a three-year plan to become one of the best companies for LGBT travelers with a plan that focused on empowering staff, educating customers and influencing suppliers.
The video is meant to shine a humorous light on the everyday awkward experiences gay couples on vacation come across. But what’s no laughing matter is the comments section on the video that are filled with some pretty disgusting statements.
YouTuber Ultack said: “Because fags make such a strong and healthy society with their involvement in reproduction and raising kids.”
Another said: “I can not wait when pedophiles recognize as LGBT people and they can openly show their love to people who love them regardless of their age.”
Looks like we do actually have a long way to go.
