On Sunday night, a fire inside the Steamworks Berlin gay sauna caused the death of three people, with another seriously injured. The reporting call was made at 10:30 p.m. At that time, there were about 30 gay men in this sauna, previously named the Apollo Splash Club (photo above). The fire reportedly broke out in the basement, though we do not yet know what caused it.
According to the Berliner Zeitung, a false ceiling could have caught fire. The injured man was taken to the hospital with suspicion of smoke inhalation. Fifteen other guests of the sauna, some clothed only in towels, were also evacuated on a special bus.
Queer.de says about the sauna that it had undergone a complete renovation and had reopened only at the beginning of January after months of work.
This could be the most deadly fire in Berlin in six years, according to experts. The video below depicts ambulance workers immediately after the fire.
