Edgar Maddison Welch, who fired a gun at a pizza restaurant he thought held a child sex ring, asked for more time to negotiate a plea deal.

Last December, Welch was arrested after he brought an assault rifle to Comet Ping Pong pizzeria. Welch believed in a bizarre conspiracy theory called Pizzagate, which supposes that the restaurant secretly traffics child sex slaves to Democratic politicians.

There’s no evidence for this theory (its proponents point to the fact that the restaurant hosts all-ages music shows as proof, which is absurd). It’s based on paranoia and probably a bit of homophobia as well, as the owner is gay. But a group of bizarre right-wingers have chosen to believe it anyway, with terrible results.

Prosecutors offered Welch a plea deal on January 24, but Welch still hasn’t decided whether or not to accept it, Raw Story reports. It expires on Monday.
