After watching Hostelworld’s recent ad featuring pop diva Mariah Carey, we couldn’t help but contemplate how chic hostels are these days.

With swanky amenities galore and lots of options for travelers on various budgets, some of the hippest spots to lay your head in destinations across the globe just happen to be hostels — not hotels.

Here are 5 chic hostels for you to check out the next time you find yourself traveling:

1. Generator Paris (Paris)

The stylish social spaces of Generator Paris are designed to meet all your traveling needs whether you want to relax in the café or enjoy a few cocktails during one of the bar’s weekly events. This hostel offers a selection of modern and comfortable rooms, but the Generator brand is most known for chic-ing up the hostel industry. Enjoy affordable luxury in one of the premium rooms with a private terrace, or choose a shared room instead to make new friends while you travel.

If after your stay you become a fan of the brand, you’re in luck: You can check out one of the other 13 locations in 12 cities across the world. From Miami to Berlin, affordable yet hip travel is possible because of Generator.

2. Once Again Hostel (Bangkok)

It’s no surprise that backpackers are fond of Once Again Hostel, thanks to its historic location and genuine hospitality. The 102-bed hostel is located on Rattanakosin Island, near popular tourist attractions like The Grand Palace and other temples.

This hostel embraces Thai elements in a creative way. Referencing the local industry, monk’s bowl lids cover one entire wall and form part of the hostel’s unique yet hip decoration. They also offer guests a cabin bed, Thailand’s traditionally designed capsule bed that many locals sleep in themselves.

3. Cocomama Hostel (Amsterdam)

Cocomama offers the best of both worlds in a super central Amsterdam location: the luxury and comfort of a hotel, the atmosphere and budget of a hostel.

The rooms here are all Holland-themed and range from private doubles to sex-bed dorms (and everything in between). You might share a bathroom in some of the dorms, but luxurious mattresses and feather duvets are found throughout.

4. Casa Garcia (Barcelona)

Casa Garcia, a high-design hostel with a cool atmosphere, has a DJ-driven bar and quirky common spaces. In a recent ad for online booking platform Hostelworld, pop princess Mariah Carey made herself at home in one of its luxe king-sized suits.

If it’s good enough for a diva like Mariah, then it’s good enough for us.

5. The Local (New York City)

The Local has great guest rooms, all which include en suite bathrooms, luxury linens, reading lights, bed dividers, large windows and locked storage space. Even better are the common spaces: a roof terrace to relax and take in the sunset over New York’s sweeping skyline, a computer lounge perfect for getting some work done, an event space where The Local shows films and a bar to grab some grub or a drink with friends.
