INTERVIEW: Academic And Porn Star Conner Habib Begged For Sex

There aren’t many porn performers who can boast a grad school pedigree, but Conner Habib is unlike anyone else on Earth. Depending on your tastes, you can either watch him having explicit gay sex or read his musings on literature. And sometimes you can see him engaging in academic discourse about the nature of pornography.

Conner was my guest recently on The Sewers of Paris, a podcast about the entertainment that has changed the lives of gay men. He opened up about details of his past that few people have ever heard: He grew up in a quiet, conservative part of Mennonite country in Pennsylvania. As a child, he loved animals despite being deathly allergic; and as a teen, he dabbled in the occult. Later on, he found acceptance in the Pennsylvania punk scene.

“There was something appealing to me about being a kid with superpowers,” he told me on the show. Conner would fantasize about somehow obtaining superpowers — ideally, powers granting him the ability to commune with animals. As it was, he had such a violent reaction to pet dander that he wasn’t even allowed to touch the family dog. Though he had a few friends and eventually began hooking up with a neighbor boy, “I was really lonely,” he says.

When he was in his teens, he found a book on the occult in the school library — and naturally, he stole it. Sometimes by himself and sometimes with a friend, he would cast spells. He felt confident that something was happening, even if there was no evidence. At one point, a friend asked him to put a hex on someone he didn’t even know at school. Habib went along because it seemed interesting.

At the time, he was realizing just what it meant to be a gay teen, and how difficult it might be to find romantic partners. He used to beg his friends for sex, and they’d just laugh it off as one big joke.

From the superpowers of his cartoon friends to the magic promises of the occult books, Conner eventually graduated into the rebellious world of punk rock. Despite being fairly homophobic, his friends detected that Conner was doing something forbidden by being openly queer, and they found a sort of unexpected respect for him.

Throughout his academic career, he’d always dreamed of being a porn star, and as a grad student he finally made the decision to move to San Francisco to become a performer. The students in his classes he told thought it was awesome, and so with their encouragement he set off for California.

Conner was nervous as he drove to his first shoot, but a friend reminded him that this is what he’d always wanted to move to San Francisco to pursue. His courage bolstered, he made it to the shoot, stripped down, and got down to business.

Throughout Conner’s life, he’s always been just outside the norm — whether it was through animal-superhero fantasies, spell-casting, punk rock, or sexwork. He doesn’t like to think of himself as an outsider, though — Conner’s strength, he says, is that he’s a bridge between different worlds.
