Slow your roll, Karl Lagerfeld! The creative director of Chanel recently came for one of our (and your) favorite actresses, accusing her of being “cheap” after she decided not to wear Chanel on the Oscars red carpet.
Which actress was it? None other than Meryl Freaking Streep! How dare you, Karl!
Lagerfeld told Women’s Wear Daily that Chanel was supposed to dress Streep for the red carpet—even going so far as to begin designing and putting together the dress—but a representative for La Streep halted the order, claiming the renowned actress would be wearing the designs of another designer.
And the part that made our jaws drop: Lagerfeld claimed that Streep was instead going to wear the dress of a designer who would be paying her to wear it.
“We give them dresses, we make the dresses, but we don’t pay,” Lagerfeld said to WWD. “A genius actress, but cheapness also, no?”
We don’t believe for a second that Meryl would let a designer pay her to wear something to an awards show. Let’s get real: She doesn’t need the money!
Streep’s people have since responded to Lagerfeld’s statement via The Hollywood Reporter: “Absolutely false, and … it is against [Streep’s] personal ethics to be paid to wear a gown on the red carpet.”
Let’s be honest, though: Much more than what Meryl Streep wears to the Oscars, we’re interested in what she’s gonna say from that podium! Will we get another buh-rilliant Golden Globes Trump takedown?! Here’s hoping!
