Cyndi Lauper Releases Reimagined, Emotional Track From ‘Kinky Boots’

Cyndi Lauper just released a music video for the Kinky Boots track “Not My Father’s Son,” a heartbreaking and inspiring song from her Tony Award-winning musical. Lauper reimagined the song, producing and arranging a new, acoustic version of the track, which features original cast members Billy Porter and Stark Sands.

The music video of this Kinky Boots track gives visuals to one of the most emotional songs from the hit show — telling the story of two very different people from wildly different backgrounds who find common ground through their shared trauma. Exploring the pressure of growing up with a parent’s very narrow expectations, the song celebrates finding peace in your own skin. The video, shot in black and white on the streets of New York City, only leaps into color as the two men — who are on a physical as well as metaphorical journey — are reunited in their safe space.

“Now felt like the right time to do this,” Lauper explains. “I wanted to tell the story of two totally different men, from different walks of life, that come together to realize that it’s our differences that should bring us together. That’s inspiring. And I think we could all use some of that these days. … It’s also a great way to welcome Billy and Stark back to Broadway!”

The Kinky Boots track and video, which includes a special appearance by Lauper on guitar, stars Tony Award-winner Billy Porter and Tony Award nominee Stark Sands, who both returned to Kinky Boots reprising the roles they created as Lola and Charlie. They returned to the show on Sept. 26 and will perform for a limited 15-week engagement through Jan. 7, 2018.

Earlier this week, Lauper’s True Colors Fund  announced the lineup for its seventh annual “Cyndi Lauper & Friends: Home for the Holidays,” presented by AT&T, on Saturday, Dec. 9 at New York City’s historic Beacon Theatre. A New York holiday tradition, the concert raises awareness about LGBT youth homelessness, with 100% of net proceeds supporting the True Colors Fund’s programs.

Lauper will be joined onstage this year by Jackson Browne, Dr. John, Paulina Rubio, Sandra Bernhard, Bridget Everett, Jake Shears, Laura Jane Grace, Ani DiFranco, Peaches, Wrabel, Jazz Jennings, Judy Gold and more. The night will be hosted by Carson Kressley.

Tickets are available to the general public now.
