Kobe Bryant Calls Ref ‘Fucking Faggot’ On TV

Kobe Bryant's fifth foul of the evening was the worst of all.

*UPDATED BELOW*

Kobe Bryant called referee Bennie Adams a “fucking faggot” last night after he was given his fourth foul of the night. Bryant threw a temper tantrum on the sidelines and yelled out the anti-gay epithet before TNT’s game commentator’s told the cameramen “to take the camera off of him right now for the children.”

We’re already hearing rumblings of people demanding Bryant issue a formal apology, but honestly, is that even enough? In a moment of anger, the athlete lashed out with an extremely offensive word that he is obviously comfortable using when he thinks the cameras are off of him.

Bryant is the star athlete in a city with one of the largest and most robust LGBT communities in the country. Like it or not, Bryant represents the city every time he puts on that gold and purple jersey (P.S.- those colors are totally gay.), and this time he’s made a homophobic mess of it.

***UPDATE: Bryant has been fined $100,000 by the NBA for his homophobic display, and has released the following statement:

“What I said last night should not be taken literally. My actions were out of frustration during the heat of the game, period. The words expressed do NOT reflect my feelings towards the gay and lesbian communities and were NOT meant to offend anyone.”

And yet…we’re completely offended because you used an incredibly offensive and hateful word to disparage an authority figure on live television. What would a literal interpretation of “fucking faggot” even mean? We don’t understand why he used the word in the first place, and we certainly don’t understand his apology. Ugh.

NBA Commissioner David Stern sums it up a bit more eloquently:

“Kobe Bryant’s comment during last night’s game was offensive and inexcusable. While I’m fully aware that basketball is an emotional game, such a distasteful term should never be tolerated. Accordingly, I have fined Kobe $100,000. Kobe and everyone associated with the NBA know that insensitive or derogatory comments are not acceptable and have no place in our game or society.”

No place at all.

Are you upset with Kobe Bryant’s televised homophobia?
