Vienna gives us life! Life Ball, that is. Once a year, drag royalty and the world’s top supermodels ascend the steps of Vienna’s magnificent city hall, celebrating life at the most lavish of parties. Even more importantly, though, they’re raising money for a great cause.

Life Ball is one of the world’s biggest HIV charity events. The annual gala, which debuted in 1993, is committed to removing taboos and fighting against the virus and its surrounding socio-political issues. This year’s campaign, Know Your Status, conveyed the important message that knowing your own status is the first step in ending the spread of HIV.

Amanda Lepore

This year’s extravaganza took place on June 10. It began with red carpet pageantry, a veritable “who’s who” from the club scene to the fashion industry. Naomi Campbell, the original supermodel, strutted the runway in a stunning beaded gown, while legendary NYC nightlife personality Amanda Lepore looked equally beautiful in her Marilyn Monroe-inspired getup.

Conchita Wurst

The fabulous Conchita Wurst, winner of Eurovision 2014, along with Austrian actress Verena Scheitz, welcomed guests in a lavishing opening ceremony that took place on a massive stage in front of city hall. Then a fashion show by Francesco Scognamiglio dazzled the audience with its hunky male models in corsets and stockings along with beautiful women in one-of-a-kind gowns. The show ended with Dionne Warwick and her granddaughter Cheyenne Elliott serenading the crowd with a duet of “What the World Needs Now.”

The real party started inside. Partygoers mingled with celebrities and danced to house music under city hall’s dome. RuPaul’s Drag Race alums including Pearl, Thorgy Thor, Miss Fame and Violet Chachki dazzled the crowd in over-the-top ensembles until sunrise.

Fashion plays a huge part in Life Ball. “Recognize the Danger” was the theme this year, with visuals inspired by artists like German painter Otto Dix from the 1920s and ’30s. Dapper gentlemen and beautiful flappers were everywhere.
