Male Rape Survivors Get a Voice in the New Documentary ‘The Voiceless’ (Video)
Part of the reason the media doesn’t often cover survivors of male rape is because fewer studies of rape throughout history have focused on men. In fact, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) didn’t even start including men in their rape statistics until 2012, and even then, they only included instances of rape involving penetration.
Despite the silence, an estimated one in 33 men has been victimized by rape sometime in their lives. The 2014 National Crime Victimization Survey found that 38 percent of rape incidents occur against men. About 46 percent of male rapes have female perpetrators and instances of rape increase for men who are transgender and Native American.
Not all of these rapes involve penetration; some involve non-consensual sexual contact like kissing and molestation. Rape puts people at higher risk of depression, drug abuse, social anxiety and suicide.
Film producer, public speaker and sexual assault survivor Vanessa McNeal has reportedly completed a new documentary that focuses on the experience of five male rape victims entitled The Voiceless. It has begun showing it at college campuses.
Before The Voiceless, McNeal served as executive producer on two previous films: I Am – The Vanessa McNeal Story and the black-and-white short film “We Are Survivors” in which eight rape survivors (one male, seven females) tell their stories and encourage others to do the same.

In another promotional trailer for The Voiceless (below), the interviewees look into the camera and say:
“Tell me it’s my fault. Tell me I could have fought harder. Tell me I was asking for it. Ask me what I was wearing. Tell me that I shouldn’t have been there. Ask me how come I let this happen to me. Ask me if I was really raped. Tell me I could have stopped it.”
McNeal hopes that the film will encourage more people to discuss “the stigma surrounding the taboo subject.”
