Ever since we found out that Cher was going to star in Mamma Mia 2, we’ve been clutching our pearls. And then, when we found out that Meryl Streep wasn’t really going to be in the sequel — and that Cher’s role may be even bigger than initially expected — we were even more excited.
Well, during last night’s Grammys, a new teaser for the film (which comes out July 20) gave us a glimpse of Cher singing some ABBA — and we’e officially gagged.
A new sneak peek of the upcoming Mamma Mia! premiered during the 2018 Grammy Awards. The sneak peek offered the first shot of Cher singing in the film as she takes on the ABBA classic “Fernando.”
Cher will play Ruby Sheridan, mother to Donna (Meryl Streep). The upcoming film will unfold as both a follow-up to the original 2007 film adaptation of the popular musical and a prequel, telling Donna’s backstory through flashbacks.
The TV spot also features returning stars Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgärd, as well as a host of newcomers, including Lily James and Broadway favorite Jessica Keenan Winn, who play the younger Donna and Tanya.
One of the other things we have to look forward to is Cher’s press tour for the film, as most actors are contractually obligated to make at least three talk show appearances for their roles in major motion pictures. Also, with a musical based on the her life set to premiere on Broadway, 2018 is shaping up to be the year of Cher.
