Star of the buzzed-about TV series This Is Us (and former pop princess) Mandy Moore recently opened up about her family for the very first time. We’re the first to admit that we had no clue she came from such a nontraditional family, and we think it’s pretty fucking cool.

During a recent sit-down with Byrdie, Moore was asked if she ever feels pressure to lead a “traditional” life of marrying, having kids, etc. As it turns out, she doesn’t, because her family is “the least traditional.”

Not only her mother but both of her brothers are gay.

“I’ve never really talked about this, but my parents are divorced. My mother left my father for a woman. And both of my two brothers are gay,” she said.

“They did an incredible job raising all of us,” Moore said about her childhood with married parents. It was after she and her siblings had reached adulthood that the family dynamic changed.

Moore married rocker Ryan Adams in 2009, at 24, only to get divorced from him in 2015. On her ill-fated marriage: “I learned that that wasn’t going to be the fruitful experience I wanted it to be.”

Speaking to how her family is doing now, she says today they’re “exactly where they should be. Everyone’s so much happier, richer and more fulfilled, being their authentic selves.”

Moore’s family background is a true story of ‘the new normal,’ and proof that healthy families come in all shapes, sizes and makeups.
