Who says boys can’t wear makeup?
As many more men (in drag or out) are embracing make-up, the big name beauty brands are starting to take note. Take Covergirl for instance. They had their first CoverBoy last year, 17-year-old YouTube sensation James Charles.
Well, Maybelline is the next brand to break down barriers! They just kicked off 2017 just right when they introduced their latest spokesperson: male beauty vlogger Manny Gutierrez (aka Manny Mua).
Gutierrez took to his Instagram to make the announcement earlier this week. He wrote, “So excited to finally announce that I am part of the @maybelline #bigshotmascara campaign! Honestly I couldn’t be more honored thrilled! Thank you to Maybelline for taking a chance on me! I look forward to working together so much more!”
The campaign so far consists of a two-part video entitled “That Boss Life”, both of which are featured on Maybelline’s Instagram. The videos feature Gutierrez with celebrity makeup artist Shayla getting “bossed up” in New York City.

We are loving this inclusion from such an influential brand in the beauty industry. Mic’s Evan Ross Katz summed it up perfectly. He wrote, “Both ads are devoid of any kind of messaging sensationalizing Gutierrez’s appearance, subversively destigmatizing the idea that makeup is a gendered domain.”
We really hope to see a lot more boundaries broken this upcoming year.
