Muslim Girl Stoned to Death For Participating in Beauty Pageant
A Muslim girl was stoned to death in the Ukraine, as punishment under Sharia law for taking part in a beauty pageant.
Katya Koren, 19, was found dead in her home village in the country’s Crimea region, her battered body left in the forest and discovered more than a week after she went missing. Her friends say that Koren wore fashionable clothing, and that her participation in the beauty pageant had angered hard-line Muslims.
The police say they have opened a murder investigation, and are investigating three teenaged boys about the brutal stoning, in which they killed Koren in the name of Islam.
One of the three teenagers, 16-year old Bihal Gaziev, was placed under arrest, and showed no remorse or regret about his actions. Gaziev told police that Koren had violated the “laws of Sharia,” and therefore deserved her death.
Koren’s death has brought new life to the international outrage at continued stonings in extremist Muslim countries, such as Iran. Last year, the practice was widely condemned when Iranian wife Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was sentenced to death by stoning for adultery – after experiencing a lifetime of abuse at the hands of a drug-addict husband who would allegedly sell her to other men for drugs. Her stoning was eventually dropped due to international outcry, but many hard-line Muslims still hold stoning to be an accepted form of punishment.
From the Daily Mail:
The European Union has called the sentence ‘barbaric’, the Vatican pleaded for clemency and Brazil, which has tried to intervene in Iran’s stand-off with the West over its nuclear programme, offered Miss Ashtiani asylum.
A number of celebrities, including Robert Redford, Robert De Niro and Sting called for her release in an open letter to the Iranian regime, backed by more than 80 actors, artists, musicians, academics and politicians.
When Carla Bruni, the French First Lady, prominently gave her support to the 43-year-old mother-of-two, Iran responded by launching two scathing attacks on Miss Bruni, branding her an adulteress with a ‘vastly immoral lifestyle’.
For comparison purposes, Amnesty International has released a chart of worldwide death sentences, which just shows how violent and oppressive many governments can become when trying to impose their will on their people. Isn’t it amazing to see that the only Western country on this list is the United States?
