Horror and More: What’s Coming to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon in October 2017
October is right around the corner — and so is Halloween! Let’s take a look at what new stuff — spooky and otherwise — is coming to the big three!
Scary Stuff for Spooky Streaming
This is Halloween… month. What better time to bundle in with your horror favorites? Well, we’ve got a number for you — the biggest, of course, is the return of Stranger Things (Netflix, October 27). And speaking of TV, the complete Season 5 of American Horror Story (Hulu, October 4) and Season 6 hits Amazon on October 1.
There are a number of horror franchises and their sequels available too. We recommend, Cult of Chucky (Netflix, October 3), the 1979 and 2005 versions of The Amityville Horror (Hulu, October 1 for both), Candyman 3: Day of the Dead (Hulu with Showtime, October 1), Pet Sematary and Pet Sematary 2 (both Amazon, October 1), Blair Witch (Amazon, October 7) and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Amazon, October 1).
Other scary favorites include the recent cannibal thriller Raw (Netflix, October 4). David Lynch’s classic Blue Velvet (Hulu with Showtime, October 1) is another must see. There’s also the true-crime story of The Boston Strangler (Hulu with Showtime, October 1). Not to mention the innovative Canadian zombie thriller, Pontypool (Hulu, October 1).
And finally, we’re scared that Netflix thinks anyone wants to watch Chris Brown: Welcome To My Life (October 7).
More Movies You Should Know About
Of course, not everyone likes to be scared. If you’re a hallo-weenie, we’ve got you covered too. We’re particularly excited for The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson (Netflix, October 6). There’s also the HIV activism documentary How to Survive a Plague (Hulu, October 1). On a similar LGBTQ theme is Stonewall (Hulu, October 3) — but given that it presented a ridiculous, whitewashed version of the true story, you might want to give that a pass.
Tarantino fans who missed it in the theaters rejoice — The Hateful Eight (October 25) is coming to Netflix! Classic film Clueless (Amazon, October 1) is also coming to streaming. We’re also excited for Patton Oswalt: Annihilation (Netflix, October 17), the first comedy special after his wife’s sudden, tragic death. Cartoon fans will be happy to learn the complete Season 7 of Adventure Time (Hulu, October 19) is coming too. Finally, we’re curious about Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold (Netflix, October 27).
Watch Them Before They’re Gone
The good lord giveth, and the good lord taketh away. There are a few great films you should watch while you still can. We recommend David Lynch’s lesbian noir Mulholland Dr. (Netflix, October 1) and Kubrick’s The Shining (Netflix, October 1).
If you’re a fan of the Broad City Season 4 premiere, catch up on Sliding Doors (Amazon, October 7) while you still can. We also recommend perhaps the Coen Brothers’ darkest film No Country For Old Men (Amazon, October 9) — and their second darkest, Barton Fink (Netflix, October 1). And finally, if you just want to laugh, make sure to catch Beavis and Butthead Do America (Hulu, October 31).
