The NewFest opening night event featured the documentary Susanne Bartsch: On Top at The Standard Hotel in New York City on Thursday, Oct. 19. It was a red carpet affair, and the after-party was amazing!

A mesmerizingly expressive portrait of a fiercely individual New York countercultural icon, the doc candidly captures the titular “Queen of the Night” and patron saint of queer inclusion and advocacy with a commanding voice and sharp wit, much like its subject.

Bartsch, who became famous for her amazing monthly parties at the Copacabana. It’s entirely unsurprising the New York Times said her name was “the night life equivalent of a couture label, thanks to the numerous extravaganzas she staged in cities from Montreal to Miami.” Her famous costumes were even put on display at the Museum at FIT in 2015. Her boutique brought designers like Vivienne Westwood, BodyMap and John Galliano to the United States.

This debut from directing duo Anthony&Alex captures the essence of Bartsch’s everyday balance and features queer nightlife luminaries RuPaul, Simon Doonan, Michael Musto and Amanda Lepore.

There was a talkback after the film moderated by Musto with the film’s subject. After that, guests made their way over to The Standard Hotel for an after-party in the hotel’s decadent lounge with sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline. Throughout the night, various performers took to the stage to entertain the crowd including Lepore, Joey Arias and Untitled Queen.
