Nico Tortorella Says LGBT People Give Him ‘the Most Flack’ for Being Bisexual
Actor Nico Tortorella joined the ladies of The View to chat about being bisexual and sexually fluid.
The Younger star came out last year as “sexually fluid” and then later clarified that he identifies as bisexual.
During the episode, he opened up that society has “a lot of work to do” when it comes to understanding and accepting bisexuality but that most of that work has to come from within the LGBTQ community
Joe Behar asked whether he feels bisexual stigma has decreased in the last several years.
“It’s getting better,” he says. “We still have a lot of work to do.”
“I think the most flack I get – and other bisexual friends I have get – is actually from inside of the [LGBT+] community, and not from straight people.”
Later on, the hosts ask whether his mutual attraction to both sexes has exacerbated jealousy in his relationships.
“That’s their own insecurity,” he says. “There is jealousy in every single relationship across the board, no matter who you’re in a relationship with.”
Also in the episode, Tortorella sat down with a groups of six young adults of various backgrounds, sexual orientations and gender identities to chat about their experiences.
Crystelle said, “In terms of my bisexuality, my mom was like, ‘OK. I guess.’ But she would drop comments like, ‘How can you be faithful to one person when you are attracted to multiple people?’ Just be really shaming.”
Another teen said: “At first I tried to come out as bisexual to my mom, and she said you can’t really be bisexual. You have to like one or another. I will only accept one or the other.”
We applaud The View for having these complicated conversations on their show. As their target demographic are the parents to whom many children are coming home and coming out to, we think it’s great they’re using their platform to educate and hopefully open up some minds in the process.
In the August/September 2017 cover of The Advocate, Tortorella appears with his partner Bethany Meyers. The couple talk to the magazine about their 11-year polyamorous relationship.
Opting out of using boyfriend and girlfriend labels, Tortorella explains, “We’re family.”
