A video presenting anti-gay sexual assault as funny is going viral in Nigeria, provoking outrage from human rights activists on social medias. Called The Lekki Gay and featuring actor Ogusbaba, the video went almost unnoticed on YouTube, as detailed by the site 76 Crimes. But since it was shared on Facebook by a Nigerian media outlet, it has reached 290,000 views.

The video depicts a gay man being visited by a friend whom he finds attractive but who brings two other men to the bedroom to threaten him with sexual assault with a banana and increasingly larger vegetables. The video goes dark at the end as the assault occurs.

We all have a sense of humour, however this sketch does more than create laughter. It glorifies and glamorises homophobic attacks faced daily in reality for many LGBT people in Nigeria,” Anglo-Nigerian activist Rev. Jide Macauley said on Facebook.

An online petition against the video is under discussion, as is action against a planned Ogusbaba comedy tour to Europe and America.
