An update to the NYC penis mural story can be found at the bottom of this article.

A pink, veiny penis towering four-stories appeared on a Lower East Side building in New York City on Christmas Eve, the handiwork of Swedish artist Carolina Falkholt. The NYC penis mural has prompted applause and complaints from locals.

The NYC penis mural graces the side of an apartment building located at 303 Broome Street between Forsyth and Eldridge Streets.

Falkholt posted an image of the penis on her Instagram account along with the caption, “NO TIME 4 BALL$$. I have never heard so much laughter and seen so many happy faces behind my back when painting as for today doing this wall on Broome Street.”

She provocatively hashtagged the image with words like #pussypower #transgender #queer #anal #bipolar #genderfluid #anxiety and #trigger.

Some Instagram commenters criticized Falkholt for offensively and direspectfully drawing explicit “shock piece” of sexual anatomy for children to see in a community that she isn’t a part of.

However, others praised the artist for creating such a provocative and subversive piece of uniquely colored art in a community that once served as a home to subversive artists (before they got priced out).

Others say that the outrage over Falkholt’s artwork belies a long-overdue community conversation about the roles that sex and sex work play in their own neighborhood.

Interestingly, the penis may be a companion piece to a more abstract depiction of a vagina that the artist drew on Pike Street. Here is the vagina.

Falkholt is currently serving as an artist-in-residence at the International Studio & Curatorial Program in Brooklyn, a program that “supports the creative development of artists and curators” and “engages communities of Brooklyn and the New York City area through public programs that enrich the appreciation and understanding of contemporary art” and “introduce New York audiences to exceptional international art practices.”

Practices like having a giant penis and vagina take over your neighborhood while you’re asleep on Christmas Eve.

UPDATE, Dec. 28, 2017: The penis has reportedly been painted over after an outcry by locals. According to NBC News 4 New York “neither Falkholt nor The New Allen [the art group that helped erect the piece] bothered to get permission from the owner of the building where the painting of the giant pink penis went up.”
