Oh dear… the New York Daily News is reporting that in an attempt to show support for Caitlyn Jenner coming out as trans, former Major League Baseball player Jose Canseco will be spending a week living as a woman. If that weren’t enough, we’ll get to watch some of this on Canseco’s upcoming web series Spend A Day With Jose. (Note: This is CLEARLY not a stunt to get mentions of Spend A Day in the media. Obviously.)
Look, Jose. I know you mean well. (OK, I’m assuming you mean well… or at the very least, pretending to mean well.) And don’t get me wrong, supporting trans people is a good thing! But there are better ways to go about it: supporting the Trans Housing Network or donating to Trans Lifeline, for instance. However, no matter how well-intentioned, dressing in drag for a week isn’t going to help anything. In fact, it may just confuse and anger folks.
Speaking of “not helping anything”, consider Canseco’s statement to the Daily News where he continually misgenders Jenner, talking about “supporting him.” Here’s a tip: when supporting anyone, use the correct pronouns. Bonus tip: Don’t embrace the most common transmisogynist trope of cross-dressing to support a trans person.
One final tip… probably don’t announce your intentions with a tweet like this one:
I wonder what I would look like as a woman. Move over Caitlyn
