WARNING: This article contains spoilers about last night’s season finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Why we’re covering this: Are you kidding? Have you ever seen a single episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race? If not, is it because you hate yourself or do you just lack eyes?
Even though the season eight finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race crowned America’s Next Drag Superstar last night, one queen completely upstaged everyone and including the winner, RuPaul herself and the 100+ drag queens in attendance… and that person was season seven winner Violet Chachki. Don’t play, you know it’s true.
Anyone watching absolutely gasped when Chachki came out in an illustrious violet gown, dripping in royal jewels, covered in fake bugs and blue veins that made her skin look like marble and a latex crown that seemed to grow from her skull. The skirt was wider even than Kim Chi’s Korean garb during her earlier song performance and the crown rising from Chachki’s skull made an undeniable statement: “Ru may be crowning a new winner, but you’re not taking my crown. It will remain a part of me… forever.”
Chachki didn’t even look in the direction of the top three finalists when she arrived onstage to greet her cheering fans. She merely unveiled her skull-crown and then struck a pose to thunderous applause.
Some fans watching alongside us lamented the eventual triumph of Bob the (comic) Drag Queen over Naomi (legs-for-days) Smalls, stating, “We’ve never had a winner who is straight-out model glam!” But Chachki’s finale appearance proved that that’s just not true — she is glam: terribly, beautifully, vainly, eye-poppingly glam (for eons, child), and she will never let you forget it.
And I’m not the only gagging over Chachki’s look last night. One fan made a video of RuPaul declaring Violet the winner…
Oh and in case you’re wondering what sorcerer conjured up Chachki’s dress, it’s Anthony Canney of The House of Canney, “Specializing in bespoke neo-Victorian apparel, corsetry, re-creations, pageantry couture & unique fetish fashions since 1999.” You can check out more of his fabulous work at his Facebook, Instagram and his website.
