Gayle King stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show for the first-time ever yesterday, and during her visit she dropped a truth bomb that has left us reeling. While she revealed she has never smoked marijuana, she also admitted that her best friend, Oprah Winfrey, does. That’s right: Oprah smokes pot.
The conversation began when DeGeneres brought up King’s birthday party, which every celebrity supposedly attended, and mentioned King’s run in with Amy Schumer. “Amy Schumer was there,” says DeGeneres, “and there may have been some marijuana being smoked around the place. So Amy Schumer now is set on smoking pot with you.”
“We had a conversation later about marijuana and I said I’ve never smoked a marijuana cigarette,” King says. “I never have. Maybe that’s part of the problem — [I call it a] cigarette.”
Once Schumer found this out, she reportedly said, “Well, we have to do something about that.”
King goes on to DeGeneres that it’s just not her thing, and that she’s “a big square.” But she’s willing to try it.
Next, Gayle King reveals that her best friend Oprah smokes pot, and surprising to some she’s rather fond of it. “I would try with Amy, but I don’t intend to do it publicly,” King says. “I said I would do it with Amy. Oprah has also smoked a little marijuana, too, I don’t mind saying. I’m not telling tales out of school.”
DeGeneres followed-up the admission with a question: “Does she like it? Does Oprah like it?”
“I refuse to answer on the grounds to incriminate her,” Gayle King answers. She next begins to say, “It’s not something that happens on a regular basis,” and then quickly trails off before trying to change the subject.
You guys, Oprah smokes pot. We’re loving this news. She was once asked the question by a nosey TMZ reporter back in 2012 and responded, “Do you think I’m going to answer that here? Maybe on The Charlie Rose Show.” (Meanwhile, that statement didn’t exactly hold up well, as Rose currently stands accused of some pretty gnarly stuff.)
There’s still a lot of stigma associated with smoking pot, even though it’s legal in parts of the United States (medicinally in some, recreationally in others). Although the news came from a friend, we’re happy that a celebrity like Oprah is being put out there as a pot smoker. Someone with her clout and notoriety being connected to the relatively harmless drug may help break down part of the stigma associated with it, bringing us one more step closer to nationwide legalization.
