Broadway actress Patti LuPone is pretty outspoken. She easily gets triggered and has no problem speaking out at what bothers her most. She’s not here for Madonna’s horrible acting, bad manners at the theater or President Donald Trump.
In honor of her latest outburst, we round-up five times Patti LuPone reminded us she is one badass bitch.
1. That time she stopped a show to yell at a photographer.
During her second finale performance as Mama Rose in Broadway’s 2008 revival of Gypsy, LuPone noticed that an audience member was taking pictures. She stopped the show to not only have him kicked out, but also to yell and scream while ushers yanked him from the theater.
2. That time she snatched a phone from an audience member’s hands.
During an intimate performance of Shows for Days, LuPone noticed an audience member texting on her cell phone throughout the first act. While exiting the stage, she yanked the phone out of the rude person’s hands, only for it to be returned by an usher after the performance concluded.
3. That time she bashed Madonna on live television:
LuPone was on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens, Live earlier this year where she shared some very frank opinions on Madonna. “Madonna is a movie killer,” she said. “She’s dead behind the eyes. She cannot act her way out of a paper bag. She should not be on film or on stage. She is a wonderful performer for what she does but she is not an actress. Bing.”
4. That time she trashed her dressing room.
LuPone wasn’t a happy camper when she was replaced by Glenn Close to play Norma Desmond in the Broadway production of Sunset Boulevard. She was so upset, she trashed her dressing room like a true diva.
Patti LuPone opened up about it in her memoir:
From the outside, I’m sure it sounded like all hell had broken loose in my dressing room, which in fact it had. I was hysterical … I took to batting practice in my dressing room with a floor lamp. I swung at everything in sight in sight — mirrors, wig stands, makeup, wardrobe, furniture, everything. Then I heaved a lamp out the second-floor window.
I said, “I’m not going on tonight, I don’t know when I’ll return.’ I was sobbing. I do remember cast members hearing the screams and sobs and coming in and trying to console me, hugging me and feeling helpless.
5. That time she cursed out President Donald Trump.
When asked on the red carpet at the 2017 Tony Awards why Donald Trump should come see her in War Paint, the show she is currently starring in on Broadway, Patti LuPone had some frank words.
She answered in true LuPone style, “Well, I hope he doesn’t because I won’t perform if he does.”
When asked why, she responded, “Because I hate the motherfucker.”
