Pics From GayBiGayGay, Texas’ Oldest Queer Music Festival
You’ve heard of South By Southwest — the massive film, music and interactive festival that descends upon Austin every Spring Break like a swarm of trendy, over-commercialized locusts. After each South By, local queer (LGBTQ) organizers Silky Shoemaker and Hazey Fairless throw a DIY music festival that’s been going on for 10 years now — it’s called GayBiGayGay.
The event (which literally started in Shoemaker and Fairless’ backyard) has featured big name acts like Big Freedia, BOTTOMS, Christeene, Diamond Rings, Erase Errata, KLAXONS, Shunda K, and Thelma and the Sleaze. This year, GayBiGayGay happened in a field outside of a Baptist Church with a van distributing free tea, a small tent serving Dr. Pepper-flavored pulled pork and cole slaw sandwiches, and a medium-sized stage decorated with cartoon dicks and papier-mâché vaginas.
The festival ran for 10 hours with most performers hanging out in the crowd’s picnic atmosphere before and after their sets. I also saw a guy getting a handjob in the woods. Good times all around.
