Remember years ago when people loved to proclaim how “cool” the new pope was? Pope Francis, they said, was so “progressive,” and he totally “gets it.” Well, it didn’t take long for any thoughts along those lines to go out the window. While he has said some things in the past that came across as almost supportive of the LGBTQ community, it’s now clear that he’s a bigoted church leader like all the rest. The recent Pope Francis trans comments he made are particularly disgusting.
Basically the pope has claimed that transgender people are on a mission to completely do away with the differences between ‘male’ and ‘female’ in our society. It’s a small-minded and ridiculous claim, but it’s one that’s hard to simply shrug off when his words affect so many — and go against the hard work trans activists have dedicated themselves to for decades.
These new Pope Francis trans comments were made on Oct. 5 when he addressed the Pontifical Academy for Life. He reportedly railed against “the biological and psychical manipulation of sexual difference, which biomedical technology allows us to perceive as completely available to free choice” and which he claims is trying to “cancel out” the differences between the sexes.
He attacks those who seek to promote the “utopia of the neutral,” and says, “Rather than contrast negative interpretations of sexual differences … they want to cancel these differences out altogether.”
And somehow he ties everything back to fertility, saying procedures like sex reassignment surgery “risk[s] dismantling the source of energy that fuels the alliance between men and women and renders them fertile.” Huh?
All non-binary people, he feels, are insulting to God’s green earth, and to that we say, “F#ck you, man.”
Statements like the garbage that Pope Francis just spewed are fuel for the fire of bathroom bills in America’s Southern states and President Trump’s ridiculous transgender military ban. We cannot pretend that statements like his — which reach huge segments of the world’s population — aren’t very dangerous.
A little more than a year ago, the pope said in a closed-door meeting with Catholic bishops, “Today in schools they are teaching this to children — to children — that everyone can choose their gender.” He also spouted some conspiracy theory-style BS about rich people paying for textbooks that “ideologically colonize” us to give the trans community more visibility.
Meanwhile, Pope Francis rails against gender-nonconforming people while wearing a capelet and dress.
