Porn Uses Hollywood Tricks And Virtual Reality To Stay Profitable

Content creators trying to find new ways to make money on the Internet is a tale as old as, well, the Internet. But even porn companies — long thought to be the exception to the rule when it comes to selling media the Internet wants to buy — are trying to find new income sources.

Lux Alptraum‘s piece for Vice‘s Motherboard lays out a few methods, and they’re awfully similar to methods the mainstream media uses. Product placement, long used — and satirized — in traditional film.

Product placement has been around since the early days of silent filmWings, the first ever Academy Award winner for best film, prominently features Hershey’s chocolate bars — back in 1927. Fritz Lang’s 1931 masterpiece (and his first sound film) has a 30 second shot starring a Wrigley’s gum billboard… perhaps an odd choice for a film about a child murderer.

Free porn site WoodRocket (NSFW, duh!), one of the only such sites to feature only original or legally licensed material, uses product placement as one way of funding their films. Their recent Game Of Thrones parody used 250 products from sex toy manufacturer Evolve Novelties to make the titular throne.

Just how Hollywood has experimented with using new technology to tell stories, the porn industry is doing the same… even if porn’s got a better history at being on the bleeding edge of tech. It’s been said that porn created the home video industry — while that’s an exaggeration, pornography has historically been early adopters of technology. Just like porn was on the Internet before Hollywood was, porn’s making content for the new virtual reality headsets. VRTube.XXX (again, NSFW if the “XXX” didn’t tip you off) provides only 3D porn for headsets like the Oculus Rift, GearVR or for the porn-fiend on the cheap, Google Cardboard.

Porn’s not going away, but the porn industry can be a look into the best techniques Hollywood’s refined for raising money, and a glimpse at the future of mainstream film and television. The smart eyes will look to pornography, even once the idle hands have finished up and been washed.

Seriously, wash your hands.
