Portugays can wed; England lowers their standards; Harvey Milk in office

  • January 8, 2010 The Portugese Parliament legalizes civil unions for same-sex couples (+10 Awesome gay blog points) but rejects a proposal to allow the newly wed gay couples in question to adopt (-7 Fairness). We’re still chalking this day up to a win. Portugese homos literally celebrate with mimosas in front of the Parlmayor mascone, portugal gay, iament building (+5 Delicious!).
  • January 8, 2001 England reduces the age of sexual consent from 18 to 16 for gay men. Northern Ireland makes the switch down to 17, the age of consent for heterosexual relations. Feeling left out, Jamaica speaks up and is all, “Our age of consent is NEVER.”
  • January 8, 1978 Harvey Milk serves his first day as the first openly gay elected official in California. Milk’s too brief time in office is marked by passage of gay rights ordinances and protections based on sexual orientation. Dan White begins his time in office on the same day, and will go on to tragically murder Milk, shooting him five times in his office.
