The upcoming Power Rangers movie will break ground in entertainment by being the first big-budget superhero movie with a queer hero.

For those of you who didn’t grow up in the 90s, the Power Rangers franchise focuses on a group of five young heroes dressed in colorful armor. The Yellow Ranger character, Trini, is revealed to have a girlfriend in the second act of the upcoming film.

Director Dean Israelite told The Hollywood Reporter, “I think what’s great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, ‘That’s OK.’ The movie is saying, ‘That’s OK,’ and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe.”

The live-action Beauty and the Beast made headlines for featuring a “gay moment” between a villain and his fanboy. But Power Rangers is one-upping the Disney film by making a major character queer, and by making her one of the good guys, too.
