A lot of people haven’t heard about pre-exposure prophylactics (PrEP), a medication that is highly effective at preventing HIV. So sexologist Alex Liu teamed up with Impulse SF, a San Francisco-based LGBTQ non-profit, to create a funny, sexy PrEP commercial. Unlike other drug ads, this one has candid swearing, a guy in a jock strap and a manly, multi-cultural cuddle puddle.
In the ad, Liu mentions that 80% of new HIV infections occur among men who have sex with other men. He then adds that PrEP can give gay guys more peace of mind during sex by significantly reducing the risk of infection.
During the commercial, Liu and his friend invite a bunch of other dudes over for a friendly bedroom romp — he even waves in a man from off the street. It’d be groundbreaking if a broadcast commercial for PrEP actually embraced gay sexuality or even promiscuity like this, but for now, we’ll just have to enjoy it online.
Here is the Impulse SF PrEP commercial:
The commercial also features fine print along the bottom with helpful reminders like, “Cock will not be provided with your prescription,” and “You’re not ingesting magic. PrEP does not transport you to some utopian free-fuck-for-all where there are no consequences. Other STIs look at PrEP and are like, ‘Cute.'”
The fine print also mentions that PrEP users should check in with their doctor every three months to ensure the medication isn’t having any negative side-effects.
But the best advice in the commercial comes near the end though, when Liu says:
So speak to a non-slut shaming, non-homophobic healthcare provider who knows their shit about PrEP to discuss if this is a good option for you. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to your healthcare provider find another fucking healthcare provider. Because no one should have to choose between cock and their health.
