Stardew Valley, an LGBTQ-inclusive indie game about living in an idyllic farming town, was one of last year’s best-selling PC games on Steam.

Sergey Galyonkin, examining data gathered by SteamSpy, puts Stardew Valley at the 16th-highest revenue-generating game on Steam in 2016, beating out Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Mafia III. Among the top 25 best-selling games by new owners, Stardew Valley comes in at #5, above juggernauts like DOOM, Sid Meier’s Civilization, Fallout 4 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. That’s an incredible achievement for a little indie game made by just one man.

Inspired by farming RPG series Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley’s surprisingly addictive gameplay focuses on growing vegetables, raising livestock and making friends with the other townsfolk. But Stardew Valley differs from the Harvest Moon series in a major way: it includes same-sex romance options. A Stardew Valley player can get married and adopt a child with a member of the same gender.

Stardew Valley, with its charming characters and gentle story, stands out amid a roster of gore-fueled action games. Maybe that’s what makes it so special.
